A trail in the physical world is an informal walk-way (or a cycle-way) which was never planned. It just happened because one day someone walked a path where there was no path and left behind the footmarks.
Then more and more people followed that same path for the similar needs. And the result was a well-defined walk-way. No more did people have to struggle to get from point A to point B. They just followed a trail that got developed by natural use.
In the information world, a trail is neither a well-thought-out article nor an extensively-researched book. Trail is an all rounded view of a topic as people learnt about it. It starts for a real need and becomes mature as people use it.
One day, someone made a plan to vacation in coastal part of Karnataka. And that someone did some research on the web to decide an itinerary. The result was a trail on coastal karnataka. Then came others who walked the same path and also came their friends. As different people used the trail, they developed it and it looks beautiful today.
And this happened with Trekking in India, Distributed Computing and Hypervisor too. And this is only a start...
